Building a Fairer Australia - One Year On

30 April 2026

From David Smith MP - April eNews

It has now been one year since the re-election of the Albanese Labor Government and my re-election as the Member for Bean.

We have been able to deliver a lot for the community and the country. There is still a lot more to do, but here are some of the important things we have delivered:

  • We are building a stronger Medicare through our Urgent Care Clinics, including in Phillip, providing more bulk billed GP appointments, opening two new bulk billing GP clinics in Molonglo and South Tuggeranong, establishing 1800 Medicare and Medicare Mental Health Clinics.
  • We have cut taxes for every Australian taxpayer, and we will be cutting taxes again this year and next.
  • We have supported the increase in the minimum wage.
  • We have reduced student debt by 20 per cent.
  • We have capped the cost of PBS scripts to no more than $25, expanded bulk‑billing GP visits, providing energy bill relief for every household, delivering free TAFE, and more.
  • We have cut taxes on superannuation for 1.3 million low-income workers.
  • We have eased the effects of the fuel crisis by cutting the fuel excise.
  • We have expanded the Home Guarantee Scheme to make buying people’s first home easier.
  • We have worked with the RBA to ban card surcharges.
