David is the Federal Member for the seat of Bean which covers multiple areas in the south of the ACT and includes Norfolk Island. He was first elected to the Senate in May 2018 as the Senator for the Australian Capital Territory, and in 2019 was elected to the House of Representatives as the Member for Bean.
Born and bred in Canberra, David grew up in Farrer, where his parents built one of the first houses in the area.
After attending Saint Peter and Saint Pauls Primary Schools and then Marist College, David obtained an Arts Degree, graduating with Honours from the Australian National University.
As a student he worked in Big W and Montezuma’s Mexican restaurant in Woden. He later worked as a relief teacher at Marist College and as a public servant for the Commonwealth and the ACT Chief Minister’s Directorate.
David commenced his long association with the Labor Party, spending the bulk of his career working in the union movement as well at the Australian Federal Police Association and Professionals Australia.
As the Director of Professionals Australia, David fought hard for pay and conditions of public service members against cut backs from Federal Governments and advocated for the rebuilding of professional expertise in the public sector. In May 2018 he was elected, on countback, as a Senator for the Australian Capital Territory and served on Select Senate Committees inquiring into Charity Fundraising and Electric Vehicles as well as serving on the Joint Standing Committee on the National Capital and External Territories. In April 2019 he resigned from the Senate to run as the Labor candidate for the new Federal seat of Bean.
David is passionate about education, fairness in the world of work, the value of community and public service and investing in the expertise to meet the challenges of climate change and the future of work.
He is married with 3 children and in his spare time loves to read and enjoys bushwalking through Canberra’s many bush walking trails. He is a dedicated Canberra Raiders and North Melbourne supporter and a strong advocate for women in sport.
