David Smith is Labor’s candidate for Bean and is a long-term resident of the Bean Electorate.
Born and raised here in Canberra, David has had an extensive commitment to the Canberra community.
After graduating from the Australian National University with a Bachelor of Arts, David worked extensively in the public service in a range of roles. David also worked as a Senior Policy Officer within the ACT Chief Minister’s Directorate before moving into the trade union movement as a Manager of Industrial Relations for the Australian Federal Police Association and then serving for 10 years as the Director of the ACT Branch of Professionals Australia. As Director of Professionals Australia, David fought hard for pay and conditions of public service members against cut backs from Federal Governments.
In 2016, David stood as Labor’s second Senate candidate to stand up to the regressive Coalition Government and its attacks on the public service. In May 2018, David was elected as Senator for the Australian Capital Territory and has fought hard to represent the ACT in your Federal Parliament.
David lives in the South of Canberra with his wife Liesl and their three children – Marcus, Eamonn and Stella.
